Though It Linger, Wait For It
Habakkuk 2:3 “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”
God gave a revelation that Babylon will attack and enslave Israelites for 70 years, because of Israelites’ sins. It will be 70 years of suffering and pain. But after 70 years, God will set Israelites free and prosper them significantly, while at the same time completely destroying Babylon. This prophecy or revelation or vision from God is for a specific period of time, and it was promised that it will surely happen. Looking back in history it did happen as God promised. Though it lingers, wait for it!
For those who were fed up with Israelites’ sins and wished to see punishment come, they were told to wait, the punishment will come. It may seem God is tolerating evil and is not acting quickly to punish evil doers. It may seem the evil people who make life unbearable are going to go unpunished. But God says, if it seems the prophecy to punish evil lingers, just wait, it will happen. Be patient. Justice is coming. Though it linger, wait for it!
For those who will suffer 70years of captivity, slavery, imprisonment, it too will come to an end. You will be liberated after the punishment for sins. If the liberation seems to delay, don’t give up, don’t think God has forgotten. Though it linger, wait for it. Are you praying and waiting for liberation from someone, someplace, some situations, etc. Liberation and answers to prayers will come, don’t give up yet. Though it linger, wait for it!
To linger is to seem to delay. To linger is more of an anxious mind’s perception than reality. To linger also suggests waiting and ready to pounce at the opportune time. To linger seems deliberate in order to be precise. The prophecy, the vision, the answer to pray, may seem to delay. It is our anxiety that makes us think it is delayed. In your anxiety, please wait! It could also linger because God wants to bring fulfillment at the precise right time, where it is most effective. When it lingers therefore, wait, the precise effective time for answers to prayer is coming. Though it linger, wait for it!
Finally God assures that His promises for punishment of sinners and liberation of the suffering will certainly come. It is sure to happen, irreversible and undelayable. Whatever seems to have delayed, is human perception and anxiety, God will not delay. At the precise time sinners and sin will be punished. At the perfect time the suffering will be liberated. This will surely happen and there will be no delay. Therefore if it seems to linger, wait for it!
Why wait? Waiting for punishment accords an opportunity for sinners due for punishment to confess and repent their sins and per chance escape punishment. Waiting is an expression of God’s mercifulness which we all need, the offenders and the offended. Take advantage that we haven’t been punished yet, and let us repent! Waiting for liberation accords us an opportunity to demonstrate faith in God who saves. In waiting for answers to prayers, we demonstrate our unflinching faith in God before the world. May our waiting time be an irrevocable testimony. Let us wait. Though it linger, wait for it.
Are you waiting for something from God? Your answer is surely coming, it will not delay, it may seem to delay, but it will not. Though it linger, wait for it, in Jesus name. Amen!
