They Did Not Involve God

They Did Not Involve God

Joshua 9:14 “The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.”

God’s command to Joshua and all Israel, was to take land from all Canaanite tribes including Gibeonites. God was using Israelites to punish Canaanites for their sins and obliterate them from earth. Gibeonites heard of victory that God gave Israelites in Jericho, Ai and many other places and they were afraid. Gibeonites hatched a plan to trick Israelites into a commitment by oath never to destroy or fully disposes them. Gibeonites succeeded in tricking Israelites because, Israelites did not inquire of the LORD. They did not involve God!

At the end Israelites had less land than what God promised, because they did not involve God in their decision. At the end Israelites had an undesirable neighbour, who lured them to idol worship, inviting God’s wrath, because they did not involve God in their decision. Israeli sons and daughters got attracted to marry and get married to the prohibited Gibeonites, thus ruining their lives, because their parents and leaders did not involve God in their decision making. Things were permanently never the same again in a negative manner, because, they did not involve God!

When Gibeonites presented themselves to con Israelites, everything seemed obvious and straightforward and it didn’t need further investigation. The Israelites believed the matter was so simple and clear and their perception was sufficient to make a decision. Therefore they did not involve God in their decision making. Even today the most obvious and straightforward stuff is what tempts us to forget to involve God. Yet, it is that which seems simple, straightforward and obvious that works against us in a big way, because, we did not involve God.

When the deal is too good and obvious we hardly involve God. When the job offer pays well, we don’t pray to ask for God’s will on whether to take it up or not. When the exam is from a favourite subject. When the person you are dating fits your check list perfectly. When the market forces obviously show you will make profit if you invest. When the property or service is so cheap and affordable. We hardly inquire of God’s will. When the new message of Prophecy meets our expectations, we don’t inquire of the LORD. We end up in huge disappointment at the new job, marriage, exam, business, etc. Because we did not involve God in our decision making.

Israelites had a leader, Joshua who could consult God. Israelites had priests who could give them a word from the LORD. But they did not inquire of the LORD. They did not involve God. We too have spiritual leaders we can consult, we have books we can read, we have the Bible – the revealed will of God, and above all we have prayer. But unfortunately somethings become deceptively simple and obvious that we don’t inquire of the LORD. We don’t involve God in our decision making. Eventually these things fail and turn against us, because, we like they, did not involve God!

May we be reminded everyday to involve God in everything. Father God forgive us where we haven’t involved you. Save us from consequences of our foolishness. We invite you to be involved in every decision and everything we do, in Jesus name. Amen! (C)rkesis@gmail.com (do not delete any part of this post, including this.
