The Day You Act, I Too Will Act!

The Day You Act, I Too Will Act!

Haggai 2:19 “Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.”

God says that from this day, I will bless you. What happened on this day that caused God to bless the people. God seems keen to let the people take note that this is the day blessings began falling on them. Why this day?

This day that God wants them to remember is not even one of the important religious days of Israel. It is not the dreaded or loved day of atonement, it is not the Sabbath and it is not even the day of pentecost. But God says, it is from this day that He will bless them! Why this day?

Look at what the Bible says about this day, that makes it curiously important.

Haggai 2:10 “On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet,”

Two things we learn here about this day

1. It was the 24th day of the ninth month
2. The word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet on this day

Haggai 2:15 “Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the Lord,”

Two things we learn from this text about this day

1. God wants them to note events of their lives this day forward in relation to this day backwards. This is a turning point day. Their history seems divided from this day into two, what it was before this day and what it will be from this day onwards.
2.This is the day when construction of God’s temple began, since the foundation had now been completed

Haggai 2:18 “Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid, consider:”

1. God says take note of this day going forward on what happens
2. This is the twenty fourth day of the ninth month
3. This is the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid. The foundation was now complete.

Haggai 2:19 “Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.”

1. You have been experiencing failure in all you do and from all the crops you plant, but it won’t happen again, from this day
2. I will bless you from this day

In the book of prophet Haggai, God had complained to the people that they had prioritised their own houses over God’s temple (Haggai 1:1-4). God told the people through the prophet that as a result of their neglect of God’s house they were not blessed (Haggai 1:5-6, 9-11). The people listened and responded to God’s call to have the Temple reconstructed. The people responded because God stirred them to respond (Haggai 1:14). On the first day of the sixth month preparations began immediately after proclamation of God’s concern (Haggai 1:1). On the twenty fourth day of the sixth month reconstruction began (Haggai 1:14-15). On the twenty first day of the second month God speaks to the prophet Haggai as if to come check on the progress of His house the Temple, but also to encourage them to carry on the reconstruction work (Haggai 2:1-4). On this notable important day of twenty fourth of the ninth month, the foundation is complete and on this day there is evidence of commitment to rebuilding God’s house. God says to the people, take note of this day (Haggai 2:18). Compare the days before and the days after this day. This day marked the turning point of the days before blessings and the day after blessings.

When Israelites acted on God’s word and fully complied, God acted from heaven to bless them. When they demonstrated their commitment to God by acting on God’s word, God in return acted on His word and blessed them. God allowed several weeks to pass in order to verify to the world that His people were committed to Him. When the world saw the Israelites stop building their own houses and direct all energies to God’s house. This could not be visible in one day. This had to wait until the foundation was fully done. The blessings could not come immediately, lest it looked like God was bribing them to carry on the work. Without blessings or evidence of blessings the Israelites focused on reconstructing the temple until the foundation was complete, from the twenty fourth day of the sixth month (Haggai 1:14-15) to the twenty fourth day of the ninth month (Haggai 2:18).

Without blessings or evidence of blessings, Israelites carried on the work. They had no date of when the blessings will come, but they worked. The experienced difficulties of a life without blessings, but they worked. Satan had accused Job of being faithful because of blessings from God (Job 1:9-10). The Israelites could not be accused of the same, because they acted without blessings. They like Job were faithful even without blessings. When the evidence of their faithfulness without blessings was clear, God appears again and tells them to take note of this day. The day God will bless them and make past days different from future days.

Have you acted on God’s word? Have you remained obedient to God even when there are no blessings associated with your obedience? Have you demonstrated to the world that your faith in God and faithfulness to God is not dependent on your receiving His blessings? Have you remained honest even after the corrupt grow rich and you remain impoverished? Have you kept the sabbath even when your life seems to get no better since you started keeping it? Have you fully forgiven those who offended you, even when they don’t seem to care and your forgiving them doesn’t seem to have changed much in your life? Have you done and continue doing what is preached and taught even when persistently no evidence comes your way?

Waiting and working towards a spouse of the same faith even when time is passing and no evidence of any coming? Forgiving and working towards the marriage welfare even when your spouse doesn’t seem interested in the marriage or care about it? Giving tithe and offering and nothing significant seems to be happening in your life as a sign of blessings? Refusing to bribe financially, sexually or otherwise in order to get a job and trusting God though times are hard and time is passing by? Trusting God and looking up to Him, even when He seems silent and absent? Hold on and remain faithful. From the day your faithfulness and obedience is demonstrated, that day God will act and bless you.

May God give us patience to remain faithful even when there is no evidence of being blessed. May the day come soon when it will be clear that we obey God not because of the desired blessings but love and trust in Him. The day you act on God’s word, that day God will act to bless you. The day of a fully demonstrated faith and obedience is the day of blessings that will significantly change our lives. May that day of a fully demonstrated faith and obedience be today, in Jesus name. Amen!(c) (do not delete any part of this post, including this. You are free to share these posts but do not edit the authorship or content…thank you and be blessed!)
