Love Turns To Hate
2 Samuel 13:15 “Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!””
Amnon was David’s first born son with his wife, Ahinoam. Tamar was a daughter of David with his wife Maacah. Tamar was therefore a step sister to Amnon. The Bible records that Tamar was so beautiful. In the course of time, his brother Amnon fell in love with her. This was clearly not love but infatuation and madness. The desire for Tamar tormented Amnon to the extent that he couldn’t comfortably carry on with activities of life. He sought advice of his best friend, Jonadab. From that advice he pretended to be ill in bed and used the opportunity to rape his sister Tamar. Then suddenly, love turned into hate.
Love turns into hate when its prohibited love. Amnon and Tamar were brother and sister. They were not supposed to fall in love as though they could get married. Their love was prohibited and the prohibition was clear even to them. Prohibited love when it matures or comes to its logical end, it turns into hate. Prohibited love that leads to sexual activity and marriage, includes love with animals, with minors, with married persons, with same sex individuals, etc. Prohibited love always ends up into unprecedented hate.
Love turns to hate if it is not true love but infatuation. Infatuation is love that is highly energetic but without substance of commitment. Love that is obsessed and refuses to rationalise and reason. Love that closes its eyes to facts like need to study, need to eat, need to sleep, need to do other things, need to be home, need to be at work. Amnon’s love refused to see facts such as, that they are related. Amnon’s love suspended all other activities of his life and became the only meaningful thing he fantasised about. Infatuation is energetic but short-lived. This love was infatuation. If love at hand is infatuation, it will soon turn into hate.
Love turns to hate if it is lust masquerading as love. Amnon had sexual lust for Tamar who was beautiful. While he thought it is love, it wasn’t love, it was lust. Love was the excuse to cross him over to the sex he lusted for. When something else masquerades as love, it will soon turn into hate. When all you want is a partner in life to remove the embarrassment of singlehood, then you use love as a cover up of that need, that love will turn into hate. When all you want is a child or children, and you cover it up as love for the spouse, that love will turn into hate. When all you want is a companion to cover up your loneliness as you use him/her to achieve your ends, that love will turn into hate. When all you lust for is to be associated with this person’s position, power and access that wealth, that love will turn into hate. True love is in friendship that seeks the welfare of the other as well as your own. Love masquerading as anything else will turn into hate.
The hate that follows love is normally severe and highly destructive. Amnon hated Tamar so much such that he threw her out of his house. This unfortunate love led to infighting in David’s house and several deaths. The love scandals causing destruction of property and even deaths is normally love that turns into hate. Love that turns into hate affects even the innocent. Tamar was innocent in the entire episode but she suffered because of Amnon’s improper love. Reputations, children and organisations suffer intensely when love turns into hate.
May God save us from love that will turn into hate. May God save us from love that has already turned into hate. May God grant us love that is true and will be a blessing today and forever, and will not turn into hate, in Jesus name!
