If The World Hates You…
John 15:18-19 “(18) If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. (19) If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”
These are the words of Jesus to His disciples of that time and of all time, including us. He predicts and explains our relationship with the world. Jesus says because of our choice to follow Jesus, to believe in Jesus and to do His will, the world will not like us. In other words Jesus is saying that, if the world hates you, it is normal, it is expected, it is nothing unusual.
Psalms 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’S and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,”
The world includes people and all that is in the world, animate and inanimate. The world that will and does hate us includes people and nature itself. The winds and the waves threatened to drown the ship that Jonah was traveling in, until he was thrown over board, that was a relationship with nature, nature demanding obedience to God. The winds and the waves threatened to drown the boat Jesus and His disciples were traveling in, until Jesus spoke to these inanimate nature and they obeyed. God shut the lions’ mouths and therefore they didn’t eat Daniel. Fire could not burn the three Hebrew boys who were faithful to God, because God asked the fire to spare them. God promises in Haggai and Malachi that our obedience to Him by giving tithes and offerings will cause nature to work in favour of our efforts to raise income and daily bread. The point we are making is that we do have an active relationship with the entire world, animate and inanimate, and that world is capable of loving and hating us. Jesus says, if the world hates you, it is normal.
The world hating us therefore means that people will not treat us well. The world hating us means that nature may work against us. You find yourself in a situation where nothing seems to go right, in spite of your efforts to make things right. People don’t like you, market forces are against you, rain season doesn’t favour you, disease and circumstances seem poised to frustrate every step of your way. These and may others is the world hating you, the world made of human and non-human things working against us. Jesus predicted that the world will hate us, hence his message to us, if the word hates you….
The human and the non-human world will hates us because we believe in Jesus. It will not hate us and harm us because Jesus is helpless, but because Jesus has allowed it to be so, and in the end we will be victorious. Jesus prediction is because He knows it and He is controlling what can happen and what will not happen. If the world hates you because of Jesus, He is still in control of your life and you are safe.
If the world hates you do not panic, it is normal. Do not be depressed and be preoccupied with the fact that you are hated. Your attitude towards the hate, should be normal. Keep your head high and trust God to protect you from that hate. If the world hates you do not quit. If the world hates you do not get stressed. If the world hates you do not react like you don’t know what is happening, yet Jesus predicted it. Your reaction to the hate by the world should show that you were already warned by Jesus and you still love Him.
John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
If the world hates you, have peace. Peace in the storm. Having peace is moving on in spite of threats by people, hate by people, gossip by people and whatever else people do. Have peace that comes from knowing that Jesus is in control. Have peace when all that you have tried has failed and yet you did your best. Have peace when sickly is the word that defines you against your wish. Have peace when the relationships of those you should be in love with has never had anything love but chaos and heartache. Have peace when in the recent past you have had to be in funerals of loved ones and its becoming too much for you and you ask, why me and why us? Have peace because Jesus predicted that the world will hate you. If the world hates you, have peace, find peace in Jesus!
The world hating us means we will face trouble and tribulations. That means our hearts will ache and situations will be bad. There will be many sad moments, failures, regrets and disappointments. Jesus says that in the world you will have tribulation. Things will get thick, messy and seemingly, i said seemingly, out of control. These will be the world hating us. Jesus is still in control. If the world hates you it means life will be hard but for a little while.
If the world hates you, Jesus says, take heart! Don’t yield to negative pressure. Don’t resign. Don’t quit. Don’t think death. Don’t think giving up on Jesus and going to witches, drug abuse, alcoholism, etc. Take heart, be brave, hold on until Jesus declares you victorious. If the world hates you be resilient!
If the world hates you, Jesus says, don’t worry, i have over come the world. The world that hates you is a defeated foe. The world that hates you are but just the kicks of a dying horse, therefore don’t panic, be calm as you watch it die. Face the hate a temporary event. Face failure as a passing cloud. Face sickness and death as a temporary interruption to life. Whatever hate comes your way, will disappear soon, leaving us victorious. If the world hates you, it is not permanent!
May God give us the ability to live for Him in peace and victory everyday, in spite of the world hating us, in Jesus name, Amen!(c)firstname.lastname@example.org (do not delete any part of this post, including this.
