Psalms 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
I will fear no evil has also been translated as, I will not be afraid, or I will not be afraid of danger and I fear no harm. Fear or being afraid or harm is when self assessment of all your abilities in comparison to the ensuing risk shows you have lost terribly. When you know you can’t contain your threat, what follows is fear, you are afraid of danger and harm. But the message today is, I will fear no evil!
Fear is caused by real situations or imagined situations. But for believers, we don’t imagine situations that can overwhelm God, we deal with reality only. No situation can overwhelm God! Therefore, even if it’s the shadow of death, I will fear no evil!
Daniel 3:17 “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king.
(3:18) But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” The three Hebrew boys tell the King that God can save even from the looming death by fire. They also tell the king that God can choose to save or not to save. Therefore since its depended on a wise God and not an angry King, they say, we will fear no evil!
Why isn’t the psalmist afraid of looming danger, harm and death? Two reasons (1) You God are with me (2) Your rod and your staff they comfort me. In other words, your presence can reverse any damage caused by harm and danger. You can even raise from the dead and prevent death. He has promised to raise all the dead from death. So why should I fear? Then on the other hand you are armed with a rod and staff. My dangers and threats are yours too. The battle is no longer mine it is for the never ever defeated God! If the battle is now the LORD’s, surely, I will fear no evil!
He is a Creator. He can create good opportunities out of disaster, if He allows it to happen. Any negative situation is actually a blessing in disguise. Therefore, I will fear no evil!
What evil faces you today? What threatens to harm you today? What danger are you afraid of? Is the prognosis poor? Are the key indicators negative? Is the trend irreversibly downwards? Is hopeless the best definition of what you face? If you are with God, He can reverse anything, even the irreversible. If you are with God He makes your battles and struggles His. If you are with God, you too can say, I will fear no evil!
May God make His presence real in our daily lives. May we respond to all that threatens us by saying, I will fear no evil! Is our prayer in Jesus name. Amen!
