God says, I know What You Are Thinking About
Ezekiel 11:5 “Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon me, and he told me to say: ’This is what the LORD says: That is what you are saying, O house of Israel, but I know what is going through your mind.’”
God gives a vision to prophet Ezekiel on what Divinity and angelic hosts are doing in Jerusalem. This reminds the prophet that though unseen by human eyes, God is actively involved in our lives. The Spirit of God then takes prophet Ezekiel to see what Israel leaders are doing and planning at the Eastern gate. In the text quoted above, God tells prophet Ezekiel to tell the Israelites and their leaders, that, God knows what they are thinking about.
While actions can be seen and interpreted by many, thoughts are reserved for the individual and God. While words can be heard by many and interpreted by many, thoughts are reserved for the individual and God. We can’t completely read the minds of each other. Even as science advances we cant read each others minds. Our worst moments as we relate to people is when we wrongly read their minds or our minds are wrongly read. You may have an idea of what I could be thinking about as insinuated in my actions and words, but you cannot fully be certain of what i am thinking about. Only the individual and God can tell what the thoughts are about. God says, I know what you are thinking about.
From the following quote, Ellen G. White writes that even Satan doesn’t know what we are thinking about and we should not give him hints of our thoughts by words and actions. “Adversary Cannot Read Thoughts—The adversary of souls is not permitted to read the thoughts of men; but he is a keen observer, and he marks the words; he takes account of actions, and skillfully adapts his temptations to meet the cases of those who place themselves in his power. If we would labor to repress sinful thoughts and feelings, giving them no expression in words or actions, Satan would be defeated; for he could not prepare his specious temptations to meet the case. But how often do professed Christians, by their lack of self-control, open the door to the adversary of souls!—The Review and Herald, March 22, 1887. (Selected Messages 1:122, 123.)”
We should find peace and comfort that even the best trained minds cannot read our thoughts. We should be glad that even Satan cannot read our thoughts. We should find safety in the fact that God secured our thoughts from any possible hacking so to speak. Only God has access to our thoughts. God says, I know what you are thinking.
While these words were a warning to Israelite leaders who were thinking and plotting evil, these words are also a warning to us. When we plan evil, God sends the same message to us today, I know what you are thinking about. Our thoughts should be trained to right thinking. We must be conscious that God is reading our thoughts and we should make them pure. Our thoughts are in the presence of God who will judge the living and the dead. Our thoughts are fully before God.
If God can read our thoughts, then salvation is free and by grace. We can put up a show of good actions and good words and successfully fool everyone. But the Saviour of the world, is not fooled by words and actions, He can read thoughts. When He saves us, it is not because we are good, but because we have surrendered to Him and He has saved us freely. These words remind us that salvation is free. God says, I know what you are thinking about.
There is a sense of grace. That while i know what you are thinking about, i have not reacted to your evil thoughts and destroyed you. I have been gracious to let you go on with evil thoughts as i give you a chance to repent and quit those thoughts and plans. If God dealt with us according to our thoughts which He sees and knows, none of us would survive. It is grace being communicated to us who have evil thoughts, when God says, I know what you are thinking about.
These words communicate safety and security for all believers. If God knows what people think about, then He knows what our enemies are thinking about. Therefore our enemies have no plans or thoughts that are unknown to our protector the God of heaven. Our enemies can think evil and plan evil in their minds, but God says to them, I know what you are thinking about. Those words translate into safety to us who are targeted. People can have encrypted calls and chats, people can meet and swear secrecy and plan, but God has a small simple message for them, I know what you are thinking about!
And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Joseph thought in his mind unknown to anyone else, that he will run away from Mary his wife to be. Mary was expectant, it wasn’t his pregnancy and he didn’t want to embarrass her or himself. While he was thinking of running away, God who reads thoughts read his mind and send an angel to reassure him that he shouldn’t run away. The Bible has several evidences of Jesus reading the minds of people around Him. Examples of God revealing plans of foreign enemy kings to prophets and Israel. God reads our thoughts and intervenes before we act or do something regrettable and silly. God says, I know what you are thinking about.
The reason why we have not succeeded many times to commit sin is because God knowing our thoughts, interferes with our plans to commit sin. We should be glad that God knows our thoughts and can interfere and even save. It is good news that God knows our thoughts. We have many times failed to sin regrettably, because God knows our thoughts. God says, I know what you are thinking about.
Are you thinking suicide? Are you thinking hate? Are you thinking revenge? Are you thinking theft? Are you thinking of cheating? Are you thinking murder? Are you thinking of running away? God says to you today, I know what you are thinking about. Now that God already knows what we are thinking about, why not surrender to Him all your worries, troubles, heartaches and pains? He can deal with it better than you can deal with it. God says to you, my child come to me, surrender to me, I know what you are thinking about!
Dear God mould our thoughts to be pure before you. Dear God read our thoughts and save us from ourselves and our limited perceptions. Dear God read the thoughts of those who seek to harm us and save us from them. May we be glad today that God knows what we are thinking about, in Jesus name, Amen!(c)firstname.lastname@example.org (do not delete any part of this post, including this.
