Do You Believe I Am Able To Do This?
Matthew 9:27-31 “(27) And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” (28) When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” (29) Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” (30) And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” (31) But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.”
The blind men followed Jesus all the way into a house He entered, they wanted Jesus to have mercy on their situation
They must have tried many options and concluded that only Jesus can solve their problem
Jesus seems to have tried to ignore their request, but they persisted not only in following but also in crying for help
If they knew of other options, they wouldn’t have persisted following Jesus and crying unto Him
When they caught up with Jesus, He asked them a very simple but pertinent question – Do you believe I am able to do this?
This is a medical condition and you know and everybody knows i am no medic – Do you believe I can do this?
I have no drugs to dispense, all i can offer is a prayer for a situation that doctors have grappled with for years – Do you believe I can do this?
Blindness was a common problem in the middle east at that time, many experts existed who could relook at their blindness problem and probably sort it, Jesus is a religious leader, discredited by mainstream religions and their leaders, and people were widely reminded not to follow nor believe in Jesus – Do you believe I can do this?
Believing in Jesus required one to make a choice to be different from the best and defy the best practices and follow a path that has been less travelled, believing in Jesus was a complete about turn from the direction that sensible people and logical people and respected people were taking, believing in Jesus was not as easy as it may seem for some people today, believing in Jesus was a sacrifice of reputation, career, and even life, – Do you believe I can do this?
The blind men courageously declared that they did believe in Jesus. They declared that “Take the world but give me Jesus, all its Joys are but a name” They knew by experience that what the world promised was but a name, but an empty promise. The world promised to heal their blindness, but it was many years later into their maturity and they were still blind… they discovered all the joys of the world are just but a name , empty! favourable response to their situation of blindness came when they declared that regardless of world standards and expectations, they did believe in Jesus. – Do you believe I can do this?
There are other blind men and women who are following Jesus today crying for Him to have mercy on them
They could be actually blind physically
They could be blind financially and can’t figure out how to get out of their quagmire
They could be blind socially and they are segregated and classified as unfit, facing rejection
They could be blind academically with poor performance
They could be blind spiritually, sinking in guilt and slavery of sin
A lot of blind people around us today – blind to the demands of God through scripture, blindness in poverty, blindness in parenting, blindness in marital affairs, blindness at the work place, blindness abounds all over
Unless they follow Jesus they will remain blind
Unless they cry to Jesus through prayer, they will remain blind
We are the modern day blind men – are you following God for the solution to your blindness? Are you crying to Jesus through prayer so that He can sort your blindness?
Jesus responds to us today, as He did that time – Do you believe I can do this?
Is it uncooperative bosses at work? Do you believe I am able to do this?
Is it a health problem? Do you believe I am able to do this?
Is it perennial lack of money in spite of salary having been paid? Do you believe I am able to do this?
Is it academic , marital? Leadership? politics, enemies, etc. What is the big issues troubling you? Do you believe I am able to do this?
You can never succeed even if you got everything right except your relationship with God and Spirit of Prophecy – Do you believe I can do this?
2 Chronicles 20:20 “And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.””
The word is believe! No believing, no establishment,
No believing, no success!
Do you believe I am able to this?
Life is spiritual, and only God’s support and leadership can deliver desired success
God will not bless us, as individuals, as a church and as institutions, unless we defy the world and clearly declare that we believe God is able to do it for us…
What is your situation today? Are you in a desperate situation and almost hopeless? Jesus has a question for you
Do you believe I am able to do this?
The blind men responded and said to Jesus that Yes, we believe
What about the blind men and women reading and listening to these words today – they too must response in word and action – to this same question
Do you believe I am able to do this?
