Revelation 2:5 “Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and *do the things you did at first* . If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”
This is the first of seven letters to seven different churches. Christ has a message for each of the seven churches. Each church represents (1) a church that actually existed at that time. (2) a period of church history that shared same characteristics and spanned from the time Christ ascended to heaven to the time He will return back on earth (3) the status of members of the church and churches of all time and any time including today.
Based on number 3, this letter applies to us too! Christ therefore says to the church in Ephesus, and to us today, you were a good church, but now you are failing. To restore your honour and fortunes…repent, and do the things you did at first!
Is your love life on the rocks? Repent of wrong doing and do the things you did at first. The things you did when you strove to win each other’s heart. Is your employment in jeopardy? Repent of any wrong doing and do the things you did at first. Arriving early, dressing neatly, working to please the boss. Do the things you did at first.
Is it your studies? Remember timetable? Remember completing assignment before sleeping? Remember avoiding bad friends? Do the things you did at first! Is it business? Remember saving? Remember controlling wastage and losses? Remember strictness in spending? Remember prayers and hardwork? Do the things you did at first!
When you were praying to pass exams, to get a job, to recover, etc. When you attended church and was very active participating. You never missed church events. Now your spiritual life is dry…you feel God is far from you…you feel empty…you wonder if you can be saved…you are concerned that God is absent in your life. Repent of your sins and do the things you did at first!
What if people maintained only what they did at first? When leaders made promises before elections and first strove to fulfill them, before they forgot and changed houses and contacts? God advises leaders…repent and do the things you did at first.
Repent implies that the wrong of the past should not be repeated. Repent implies that only the good of the past should be done. Look at how far you have fallen in your business, at your workplace, in your leadership, healthwise, financially, spiritually, socially and Morally. Repent and do the things, the right things, you did at first!
The text warns that failure to do this repentance and doing the first things will be disastrous. Whatever remains of your career, business, health, family, academic achievements, spiritual life, etc. Will be lost for good. Therefore, repent, and do the things you did at first!
May God help us to repent and do the things we did at first so that we enjoy as we did at first. Enjoy our employment as we did at first. Enjoy our relationship as we did at first. Enjoy our achievements and whatever else, as we did at first. May this be our prayer and experience from today henceforth in Jesus name. Amen!
