All Things By Him And For Him

All Things By Him And For Him

Colossians 1:16 “For by him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

Our main focus is this verse 16, but it cannot be understood by itself without reading the surrounding texts. These texts refer to Jesus and focus on Jesus. Our emphasis is that all things are by Him and for Him. But first let us understand the surrounding texts.

Colossians 1:15 “He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
(1:16) For by him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him (Jesus) and for him (Jesus).
(1:17) He (Jesus) is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
(1:18) And he (Jesus) is the head of the body, the church; he (Jesus) is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he (Jesus) might have the supremacy.
(1:19) For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him (Jesus),”

This part of the Bible focuses on Jesus, who He is, what He did and what He is to us and His universal role. This text places Jesus above all else. Jesus is presented as God and nothing less. Jesus is presented as Creator, which is a God role. Jesus is presented as supreme above everything else, and only God is supreme. When verse 18 refers to Him as firstborn, it doesn’t mean as has been misunderstood that He was created, it presents His role in human nature to save us. Where Adam the first born/created failed humanity, Jesus the God become man for our salvation became first born to conquer sin and death. That is why He is referred to as first born among the dead.

This passage of the Bible therefore emphasises that we Have God the Father and God the Son who is as much God and no less God. Other passages which are not our focus today emphasise that even the Holy Spirit is God. For further understanding on this concept of God being three in one, refer to our other article/blog of June 28, 2018, “The Trinity, An Introduction”, https://church.ueab.ac.ke/?p=573.

Colossians 1:16 “For by him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”

A look at this passage shows that Jesus Christ is the centre of the universe. Everything must happen in His interest or else, it is opposed to Him. He is the reason for our existence. He is the purpose of our life. We have no other purpose in life than Jesus. We were not born to help the poor, build churches, amass wealth, build empires or be leaders. We were born to do the will of Jesus Christ in those things.

We don’t die and exit earth because our work is done, but because we have either satisfied or failed to satisfy Jesus Christ for whom we live and move. It is therefore wise to ensure that the purpose of Christ is our purpose and the will of Christ is what we live to implement. Jesus is the centre of the universe, everything is by Him and for Him.

The Bible tells us that all things were created by Him. All things. Good and bad. All things. He created the good. He allows the bad, in that sense we loosely say He created it. If Jesus wanted to do away with the bad He would. Jesus is so mighty that even the bad that opposes His will and works against His intentions, ends up fulfilling His purpose against its own will. That is why Romans 8:28 reminds us that all things work for the good of those who love God. Good things and bad things. All were created by Him and for Him.

Jesus is still the Creator. He still creates things in my life and in His church and in the world. He creates a spouse for me. He creates children for me. He creates family and friends for me. He creates education and employment opportunities for me. He creates business chances for me. He creates healing in my sickness. He creates escape route when i am in trouble. When I pray, He creates answers to prayer for me. While it seems all these is for me, the Bible texts today clarifies that, all things were created by Him and for Him.

Therefore since everything is for Him, i must seek His interest in all that I do. What does He want in my marriage and family. Not what i want or feel, no! If He hates divorce, I stay in, not for me, but for Him, for all things even challenges in marriage and family were created by Him and for Him. What does He want in my life, my stressed up life, my useless life. Not what i want or feel, no! I can’t commit suicide because i am tired of this world, no! If He has given me life, then He still needs me around and i shouldn’t take that life that He gave. In case of any trouble, i don’t turn to my skills and thoughts only, i also turn to Him, for whom i live.

I bear with bad times and difficulties because my life is not mine. All things were created by Him and for Him. If He hasn’t created a spouse yet for me. If He hasn’t yet created a better source of income for me. If He hasn’t created perfect health for me. If He hasn’t created peace of mind for me. I will wait on Him. I will not give up because it is not about me and what I want, but about God. Isaiah 40:31 those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength and soar like Eagles.

We get depressed and frustrated and easily give up, when we look at ourselves and compare ourselves with others. Yet we were designed to look up to God and not to ourselves or others. Your purpose is in God and not yourself or in comparison to another. Have you come to a dead end street? Are you at the end of your abilities and it is completely hopeless? Turn to God for whom you live and move, nothing is impossible with God. When Israel reached end of the road by the Red Sea, God who creates, created a way through the sea. He can still create a way out of your dead end. Remember He is a creator, and, all things were created for Him and by Him.

May we find our purpose, hope and joy in Jesus Christ, Amen!(c)rkesis@gmail.com (do not delete any part of this post, including this. You are free to share these posts, but do not edit the authorship or content…thank you and be blessed!)
