After 40 Days And Nights And Years
The use of 40 days, nights and years is very common in the Bible. The examples are not few and some can easily be missed. What we observe however is that
(1) 40 is a time period of a certain activity, e.g. leadership of David, prayer and Fasting, etc. It is a period when something is done
(2) 40 separates two major periods of before and after something. It is an interlude
(3) The last phase before a major occurrence. 40 years before the promised land
(4) A period of struggle to overcome sin and struggle in prayer
(5) We have every reason to believe that the use of 40 was literal in Bible times. We have no express command or reason to believe that we too need to implement the 40 literally in our lives. The application of 40 should be symbolic of a period of prayer and expecting God’s answer. We don’t need to literally use 40 days and nights and years in our lives.
Something major happens after 40 days and nights or years. We need to be keen, not on the 40 but what comes after 40. In the extra-biblical world we have sayings in relation to 40, such as, life begins at 40. The Swahili of East Africa have a saying, siku za mwizi ni arobaine (translated as – the days a thief has before being arrested are 40). Both sayings like the biblical narratives, emphasise on what happens after 40.
Exodus 34:28 “Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant–the Ten Commandments. (34:29) When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD.”
After 40 days with God, Moses got the 10 commandments. After 40 days with God, Moses was shining, because he was with God. We too can have major achievements and come out shining if we spent time with God. After 40 days and nights and years.
Numbers 14:34 “For forty years–one year for each of the forty days you explored the land –you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.'”
The Israelites were to suffer for 40 years because of sin. But after 40 years they would inherit the promised land. After 40 years of suffering, we too will inherit the promised land on earth and in heaven ultimately.
1 Kings 19:8 “So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.”
After 40 days and nights Elijah reached where he would meet God. After 40 days and nights of Spiritual travel, may we also meet God and be forever changed and blessed.
Jonah 3:4 “On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: ” Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.””
The 40 days were God’s last warning, last opportunity for Ninevites to repent. They did and were saved. We have been granted 40 more days and nights and years to make up our minds for God, after which it’s either better life or eternal death. Take advantage now, because something will happen, after 40 days and nights and years!
Matthew 4:2 ” After fasting forty days and forty nights , he was hungry.
(4:3) The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”” (4:17) From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
After 40 days and nights of fasting, Jesus was tempted and He overcame. After 40 days and nights of prayer and fasting Jesus began His earthly preaching ministry.
You are safe to meet temptation and start your work, if it is after 40 days and nights of prayer. After 40 days and nights, you will overcome the tempter and excel in your work.
The 40 may symbolise how long you have struggled. The 40 may symbolise your agony and prayers. The 40 is what you have gone or are going through. After 40 a new phase begins… if you are faithful during 40, then after 40 will be a blessing. If you are unfaithful during 40 then after 40 will be hopeless. May your 40 be a brief time and may Victory be real after 40!
After the symbolic 40 days and nights and years…God has a big good plan for you! There will be a clear difference on before 40 and after 40, because during 40 you prayed and during 40 you overcame sin, and now after 40 you celebrate and conquer and achieve and come out victorious!
May our after 40 be an after 40 of victory in everything and may it be soon, yes even today, in Jesus name. Amen!
